For the Dogs was formed April 2009 by three friends that were committed to saving dogs from the Mahoning County dog pound in Youngstown, Ohio. The sick, injured and neglected dogs soon became our passion. For the Dogs is an all-volunteer, foster home-based organization, funded completely on donations. We have no costly salaries or office overhead which guarantees that your gift will go directly toward saving lives. For the Dogs became a 501c3 non profit in May 2010 and we have been going strong ever since.

Everything Animal Rescue Does is “For the Dogs”
The average person probably doesn’t give much thought to the dogs at Mahoning County Dog Pound, but the members of For the Dogs Animal Rescue have made them their passion. They know better than the misconception that pound dogs are just strays or are damaged in some way. In fact, they know firsthand that the majority of them once had homes, evident in their temperaments and their longing for love and human companionship. Whether lost and unclaimed, or purposefully abandoned, many of the “unwanted” dogs already know how to walk gently on a leash, sit, and even give a paw.
Dedicated to the mission of finding homes for the ones left behind, three friends founded For the Dogs in April 2009. Since then, the group has called, emailed, networked, and driven countless miles to save as many as they could from euthanasia at Mahoning County Dog Pound. While many positive changes have been made at the pound in recent years, and the euthanasia rate has dropped dramatically, the need still exists for rescues to step up for the dogs to help them get adopted by loving families.
The first step in rescuing a dog is to get it out of the pound and to the vet. For the Dogs transports it, pays for an exam, heartworm testing and preventative, immunizations, and later, spay or neuter. If the dog has been injured or has a serious medical condition, the expenses can easily escalate. For the Dogs will also evaluate it for temperament.
Next, the dog will go to a foster home until a suitable permanent home can be found. A dog may be in foster care for just a few weeks or six months or more, depending on the situation. For the Dogs provides all food and a crate so that the dog has a safe, comfortable place of its own. Fosters provide a loving environment and really get to know the dog’s personality. Bridging the gap between the pound and a forever home, foster homes play an important role in matching a dog with the right home, and without them, For the Dogs could not exist.
Once the dog is in foster care, the volunteers at For the Dogs post its biography and photos on its website and on petfinder.com. They will also make the dog available at adoption events at local pet supply stores. If a family is interested in adopting it, they fill out an adoption application and submit it for approval. For the Dogs will contact them and set up a meeting and possibly a sleepover, or two-week trial adoption. Adoptive families must sign a contract to keep in touch with For the Dogs periodically and to return the dog to the rescue should they ever have to re-home it.
To perform these labors of love, the 501 (c) 3 non-profit group relies solely on donations and proceeds from fundraisers like spaghetti dinners, wine tastings, and other events. If you would like to make a donation, volunteer, learn more about fostering or adopting, please email Carrie.
